Is ChatGPT Harmful or Helpful to Business Professionals? Part 1.2 The Good

A. The Good, continues

Traditional AI programs such as SAP or Enterprise Systems that were designed to assist accountants in their decision-making process can only generate mechanical suggestions according to guidelines set by human users. In comparison, rather than the formulaic computer program language produced by these older AIs, ChatGPT, without the aid of the internet, answers a wide array of questions and requests as if it has been studying and accumulating a wide spectrum of knowledge for years. ChatGPT can also learn and improve its accuracy from ongoing interactions with users in its constant evolution. That is, ChatGPT can anticipate users’ needs and questions to provide the assistance they seek. It remembers its answers to previous questions and can reference answers previously generated from ongoing interactions with users. ChatGPT draws its functionality from the massive text data accumulated in its artificial “brain” so that it resembles prominent scholars with knowledge in disciplines from medieval history to medical hypotheses.

Working hand in hand with its enormous and growing knowledge base is ChatGPT’s striking ability to imitate human conversation. The interaction with the chatbot feels as if users are conversing with a real and intelligent person, thanks to its use of a natural language processing program. This allows ChatGPT to understand and respond to user input in a manner similar to how humans communicate in a natural setting. Consequently, ChatGPT can easily produce creative and business writing. While the quality of output can vary, ChatGPT could be a powerful tool for creative writers looking for inspiration and new ideas or for business professionals writing mundane letters and memos. In addition to creative and business fields, ChatGPT has potential application in a wide range of industries. For example, it could be used in customer service to provide quick and accurate responses without leaving customers with the impression that they are being forced to interact with a machine. ChatGPT can also provide the aforementioned functions in multiple languages (Screenshot 7). All of these incredible functionalities can be incorporated by tax professionals across the globe — and even the most basic functions in a tax practice can benefit from advanced AIs such as ChatGPT.

Starting first with basic email, correspondence from clients could be answered by ChatGPT, since it generates replies using natural human language. The chatbot could read and craft responses to clients as if the replies were from the tax professionals. If the email response function is embedded with additional computer program code generated by ChatGPT, it would also be able to forward emails with more technical or client- specific tax issues to the appropriate tax professional. Simultaneously, ChatGPT could automatically generate replies such as “[name of the tax professional or ‘I’] is/am aware of your questions and will be in touch with you soon.” This basic email function could free up tax professionals to conduct more valuable pursuits, such as looking into the answers clients seek, instead of spending a bulk of time answering emails that may not be billable or add value.
